The best and the worst.
My style is mainly pretty classic, but I enjoy throwing in the odd rebellious twist every now and then (nothing too over the top!), so I’m really looking forward to the Met’s spring 2013 exhibition PUNK: Chaos to Couture. Fashion doesn’t just come from designers anymore, it also comes from the streets, which has introduced some very cool ideas to the couture world. My favorite details taken from street-punk looks are spiked shoulders and chain jewelry. I was really entertained by the red-carpet looks from the Gala last night, and put together my own list of best and worst looks.
My top three picks merge the punk theme of the gala with more traditional lines and remain appropriate for the occasion:
Anne Hathaway in vintage Valentino
I was blown away by Anna Hathaway’s look. She really pulled off the classy-sexy-punk look. The dress is a stunner and fits her perfectly, and the blonde hair looks fabulous against the all-black ensemble.
Cara Delevingne in Burberry
The studs on the bodice and sleeves of what would otherwise be a plain black gown really make it an outstanding piece and perfect for the punk theme.
Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture
Who says white can’t be punk? The zipper details on the front of this dress and strong shoulders paired with a dark lip definitely add a punk vibe. I’m in love with this gown because it balances lady-like fabric with edgy shapes and details.
The three worst looks are, in my opinion, over-done and excessive or ill-suited to the person wearing it:
Beyonce in Givenchy
I think this is just way over the top and much too matchy. The boots and gloves are a complete overkill. The dress has potential, but the entire look was over-styled, which is unfortunate considering she was honorary chair for the gala.
Kim Kardashian in Givenchy
Kim Kardashian has one of the worst pregnancy styles I’ve ever seen. It’s obvious she likes to experiment and show her body, but this just doesn’t work. The pattern makers her look bigger than she is and the style of the dress completely covers her body.
Madonna in Givenchy
Yes, it’s a punk-themed gala, but this could have been done more tastefully, especially by adding bottoms! I guess Madonna will be Madonna. I do love the Casadei shoes though!
